Diederik Boertien
Diederik Boertien is a demographer and sociologist. He holds a PhD in Political and Social Sciences from Pompeu Fabra University and leads the Families, Social Change and Inequality unit at the Centre for Demographic Studies (CED). His research focuses on family relationships and social inequality. Some of the guiding questions behind his work include: Why do people with higher levels of education and economic resources separate less often than those who are more disadvantaged? How do family dynamics affect individual wealth, income inequality, and wealth inequality? How does sexual orientation influence socioeconomic opportunities and family life? His projects have been funded by the European Research Council (ERC), the Government of Catalonia, the Spanish Ministry of Education, and the “la Caixa” Foundation. His work has been published in journals such as Demography, European Sociological Review, PNAS, and Social Forces. He is currently principal investigator of the projects Sexual Minorities and Inequality of Opportunity and Increasing Wealth Inequality in Spain: Who is Falling Behind and Why? Before joining the Centre for Demographic Studies, he was a researcher at the European University Institute (EUI).
