Manuel Castells
Manuel Castells is a sociologist, economist, and professor of sociology and urbanism at the University of California, Berkeley. He is also Professor of Sociology at the Open University of Catalonia, where he is director of the Internet Interdisciplinary Institute. His extensive research career focuses on economic evolution to political, social and cultural transformations within the framework of a comprehensive information theory. One of his main works is the trilogy The Information Age (1997). Other relevant publications are The Internet Galaxy (2001), The Network Society (2004), Communication and Power (2009), Networks of Outrage and Hope. Social Movements in the Internet Age (2012), and Reconceptualizing Development in the Global Information Age (2014). He is the fifth most cited academic in the field of social sciences in the world and is currently Minister of Science, Innovation and Universities of the Spanish government.
