Sociologist Michel Wieviorka, co-director of the Collège d’Études Mondiales and director of studies at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris, will reflect on democracy in the Euro-Mediterranean region with Tamirace Fakhoury in the second debate of the public events series organized by the Centre for Contemporary Studies in collaboration with the European Institute for Mediterranean (IEMed) and the General Direction for European and Mediterranean Affairs of the Ministry for Foreign Action, Institutional Relations and Transparency. The dialogue is part of the IDEES special issue, “A new vision for the Mediterranean“. The conversation will be in French with simultaneous translation into Spanish through Zoom.
Michel Wieviorka is focused on the notions of conflict, terrorism and violence, as well as on the study of racism, social movements, and multiculturalism. He is currently one of the most famous and media-exposed voices of the French intellectual arena and one of the most highly reputed sociologist in the world. Highlights among his books published in Spain include Una sociología para el siglo XXI (2011), El racismo: una introducción (2009), Otro mundo… Discrepancias, sorpresas y derivas en la antimundialización (2009) and El espacio del racismo (1992).
Tamirace Fakhoury is an associate professor of Political Science and International Affairs at the American Lebanese University (LAU). She is the director of the Institute of Social Justice and Conflict Resolution and she is also member of the EuMedMi research network and the Global Migration Policy Associates of Geneva. She is currently the principal investigator of a Carnegie grant on “Resilience and Inclusive Governance in the post-2011 Arab Landscape” at American Lebanese University. Fakhoury has a broad academic career focused on Euro-Mediterranean migration issues, migration policies and the role of immigrant communities.
