Ana Mónica Fonseca is a lecturer in the History Department of the Lisbon Institute (Iscte) and, since 2022, director of the Iscte Center for International Studies. She is also director of the Master’s Degree in Modern and Contemporary History at Iscte. Her research focuses on transitions to democracy in southern Europe, relations between Portugal and Germany during the Cold War and European social democracy, as well as democracy promotion. She publishes regularly in national and international journals (Journal of European Integration History, Portuguese Journal of Social Sciences, Ler História, Relações Internacionais). She holds a PhD in Modern and Contemporary History from the University Institute of Lisbon with a thesis on German social democracy and the Portuguese transition to democracy. During the period 2006-2015 she was a researcher at the Portuguese Institute of International Relations of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa (IPRI-NOVA).
