According to Chantal Mouffe, currently prevailing political theory is incapable of conceiving a form of democratic politics appropriate for this post-Cold War age of globalisation. For this reason, she believes we must develop and define the basic principles of a new model called “agnostic pluralism”. In the final part of the article, the author presents some reflections on the type of progressive politics she considers most capable of strengthening democratic citizenship in the current age of globalisation.

Chantal Mouffe és filòsofa i politòloga, professora de Teoria Política al Center for the Study of Democracy del Departament de Ciències Polítiques i Relacions Internacionals de la Universitat de Westminster, a Londres. S'inscriu en el pensament polític del postmarxisme o post-estructuralisme, i la seva producció acadèmica destaca per la publicació de l'assaig Hegemonia i estratègia socialista (1985), escrit conjuntament amb el filòsof Ernesto Laclau. Altres obres importants són The Return of the Political (1993), The Democratic Paradox (2000), On the Political (2005), Hegemony, Radical Democracy, and the Political (2013) i For a Left Populism (2019).
