Dialogue: Democracy in Europe

Daniel Innerarity, José Luis Martí

Professor of Political and Social Philosophy, Daniel Innerarity, dialogues with the Philosophy of Law professor Josep Lluís Martí about democracy in Europe from a double perspective: on the one hand, from the vision of the European Union and, on the other hand, from the internal point of view of the EU member states. The dialogue is moderated by Pere Almeda, director of the Centre for Contemporary Studies.

Daniel Innerarity

Daniel Innerarity is Professor of Political Philosophy, Ikerbasque researcher at the University of the Basque Country and Chair of Artificial Intelligence and Democracy at the European University Institute in Florence. He is also director of the Institute for Democratic Governance (Globernance). He holds a PhD in Philosophy and has been a visiting professor at various European and American universities. He authored several books such as La libertad democrática (2023), La sociedad del desconocimiento (2022) and Una teoría de la democracia compleja: gobernar en el siglo XXI (2019) –translated into English by Bloomsbury as A Theory of Complex Democracy (2024)–. He is a regular contributor to El País, El Correo/Diario Vasco and La Vanguardia.

José Luis Martí

José Luis Martí is a researcher focused in theory of democracy. He is Professor of Philosophy of Law at Pompeu Fabra University. His fields of study are deliberative democracy, participatory democracy and digital democracy, as well as republicanism and new technologies for citizen participation. He holds a PhD in Political Science and currently leads the Global Democracy Project research project.
