Albert Roca \u00c1lvarez holds a PhD in Social and Cultural Anthropology from the Universitat de Barcelona and is a Professor of Anthropology at the Universitat de Lleida. He is a principal investigator of the Research Group on African Societies (GESA) and the Interdisciplinary Research Group on Development and Multiculturalism (GIEDEM) of the Universitat de Lleida, as well as belonging to the interuniversity network ARDA (Grouping for the Research and Teaching on Africa). He heads the journal Studia Africana<\/em> and coordinates the international research network “Health, Cultures and Development in Africa” (SACUDA) and the international master’s degree “Cultures and development in Africa”. Throughout his research career, he has focused on the evolution of traditional African power relations, especially during democratization, as well as the role of local knowledge in African development and history, especially in the field of health. Since 1991 he has worked in the field in Madagascar.
