He covers the Balkans, Ukraine and other regions for <em>The Economist<\/em>. He has been\u00a0a fellow of the Europe\u2019s Futures project at the Institute of Human Sciences (IWM) in Vienna. He has worked for many major publications and broadcasters, notably as a war correspondent for the <em>New York Review of Books<\/em> on conflicts from Afghanistan to Ukraine. He was shortlisted for the 2022 Bayeux Calvedos-Normandy Award for war correspondents. He is the author of three books on the Balkans: <em>The Serbs: History, Myth and the Destruction of Yugoslavia<\/em> (1997); <em>Kosovo: War &amp; Revenge<\/em> (2000) and <em>Kosovo: What Everyone Needs to Know<\/em> (2008). In 2009 he was a senior research visiting fellow at LSEE, the London School of Economics\u2019 South Eastern Europe research institute, where he developed the concept of the &#8220;Yugosphere&#8221;. In 2016 he published <em>In Wartime: Stories from Ukraine<\/em>.
