Nobel laureate in economics, Amartya Sen, suggests that despite the plethora of events that occurred in the twentieth century, ultimately, he would have no hesitation in choosing the most pre-eminent development among them: the growth of democracy. His choice does not intend to downplay the significance of other notable twentieth-century occurrences. However, Sen believes that in years to come, when people look back to try and build a picture of what changed in that century, it will be hard for them to give primacy to anything other than the emergence of democracy as the most acceptable form of government. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
